This sits in genuinely contested territory from the ground up — both the observation and the interpretation are disputed.
The materialist or physicalist view that the mind is what the brain does — that thoughts, feelings, and the sense of being someone are activities of physical neurons. On this picture there is no separate soul or non-physical mental substance: damage the brain, and you damage the mind, full stop. It's the working assumption behind most of modern neuroscience and the medicine that flows from it.
The strongest arguments in favour

Has the strongest track record of any worldview at predicting and intervening in the world, and tight neural correlates of consciousness make brain dependence the safest working hypothesis. The persistent gap is the 'hard problem' — why any physical process is accompanied by subjective experience — which has no agreed-upon mechanism.
That conscious states depend heavily on brain states, that altering the brain reliably alters experience, and that physical mechanism is the right default for explaining most of nature.
That experience is identical to or fully reducible to neural activity, that nothing of mind persists when the brain stops, or that nothing more is required to account for mind.
